Over the past few months, my fiancé and I have found ourselves back at The Rogue Gentlemen for cocktails on several occasions and we’ve really enjoyed ourselves this go-around. In the past, we’ve been on the fence about this bar mainly for price reasons but lightning finally struck. We realized that because the cocktails are so much more expensive than a typical Richmond bar (most average $14), we had very high expectations in terms of what the bar experience should deliver. It was frustrating to not be able to get a seat at the bar. It was frustrating to not be able to talk to the bartender. It was frustrating to not have the bartender make our drinks right in front of us.
So, instead of giving up like we normally do, we tried something new. We started going to The Rogue Gentlemen about an hour before close (roughly 10:30pm-11pm) so the kitchen was closed – and we visited on historically non-busy nights (Tuesday and Wednesday). Boy did we strike gold. Now, instead of fighting for attention we basically get the bar all to ourselves. It’s such a blast, the people are so great, and we’ve fallen so in love with the bar we’re hosting our Rehearsal Dinner there.
If you get a chance, stop by The Rogue Gentlemen to try…..
The Volcano Goddess – $14 –> house barrel aged Cachaca 51, Combier, chili-infused Dolin Rouge, pineapple + lime juice, turbinado syrup
Two to Mango – $14 –> serrano & chili-infused Barr Hill gin, cucumber syrup, lime juice, cilantro salt
Dealer’s Choice – $13 –> I chose citrus, low alcohol, refreshing, light –> I got a delicious combo of bubbles and gin with some subtle citrusy character
Oh, and by the way, you have to try the Chicken Sandwich that goes on the menu next week-ish. I’m sure there’s tons of butter on the chicken but it was fried perfectly, the pickles give it brightness, and the toasted potato buns were delectable.
